Pet Food

It may go without saying that you need to have pet food to be a good pet owner, but that doesn’t mean that you know what makes good food for your pet. For example, many dog foods are made primarily of corn. Corn is a vegetable that we have barely integrated into our digestive systems (just ask anyone who’s had a baby) yet we’re feeding it to our pets. It is certainly not doing them any favors, and it could actively be harming your dog, depending on other mitigating or accentuating factors.

Cat food is also susceptible to the infusion of corn in lieu of a more nutritious alternative, but there is a much larger variety of wet cat food, which does a better job of avoiding that particular pet food blunder. Cats are also pickier eaters than dogs, so if they don’t like what you are feeding them, you will hear about it in no uncertain terms.

Unlike cats and dogs, for birds corn is a desirable additive in pet food. The primary difference is that pet birds are usually herbivores, and as such they have digestive systems equipped to handle corn. Felines and canines on the other hand are carnivores in the wild, and so they aren’t used to eating vegetation, which causes issues.
