“House Rules for Cats and Dogs” magnets were developed by Rex Bohn, a commercial illustrator in St. Charles, Illinois, out of a desperate need to communicate with his dog and two cats. Bohn reasoned that if you want pets to follow the rules of the house you must first in fact inform them what the pet rules are. But how best to do that? Having had only mixed results with spoken English and not being multi-lingual, he turned to the International Symbol System that serves us so well on the highways and public byways around the world. And so, House Rules for Cats and Dogs were born. Later, when asked about his inspiration for this species-bridging communications breakthrough, Bohn replied, “I just wanted my cat to stop throwing up on the carpet.”
