Sure, CATS ‘N’ DOGS is America’s leading cat-and-dog-themed
gift shop (we said modestly), but let’s never forget what it’s really
all about: Cats and Dogs. With that in mind, we feature toys, treats,
and grooming products designed for the benefit of our favorite animals
and nobody else. Our catalog section for cats features a catnip cigar
like no other, Kitty Kaviar treats that may spoil your kitty from
eating those famous-brand supermarket treats ever again, and other
fun products. But our favorite cat toy remains Video Catnip, a 25-minute-long
video for cats originally produced more than 10 years ago that continues,
virtually without exception, to fascinate felines over and over again.
The video stars various birds and squirrels doing the things they
do. The soundtrack features birds singing. Regardless of where your
cats are in the house, and regardless of what they’re doing (resting?),
as soon as they hear the theme song to this video they will rush to
line up in front of the TV. Some people who know how to program their
VCRs for continuous play leave the tape on all day to prevent separation
anxiety. We don’t know how to do that, so we play it about twice a
week, as a treat. |

At our Geneva, Illinois, store, CATS ‘N’ DOGS stocks
a variety of treat (or cookie) jars in a wide range of sizes, colors
and designs. Some of the most popular jars include the breed-specific
porcelain jars featured here. They’re big – about 10.5 inches high
– and the lid features a gasket that helps keep the contents fresh.
The jars themselves are simple and nicely finished, so whether you
choose to load them up with doggie treats or Oreos, they’ll look good
on any kitchen counter. CATS ‘N’ DOGS will add additional breeds to

B. Kliban (1935-1990) published his first book, “Cat,”
in 1975, based on cartoons he had scribbled on scraps of paper and
cocktail napkins. Kliban was a cartoonist for Playboy at the time,
and one of the magazine’s editors noticed the scribbles and pressed
Kliban to seek out a literary agent. “Cat” is believed by many to
have set the stage for a number of cat cartoonists that were to follow.
But Kliban’s approach would remain unique. Unlike many other cartoon
cats, journalist Martin Plimmer wrote, Kliban’s cats were never sentimental.
Kliban lived with four cats and “drew them with affection,” Plimmer
says, but he also revealed them as “self-important” and “hedonistic.”
If Kliban’s cats were enigmatic, so was he. His widow, Judith Kliban
Bixby, told an interviewer that Kliban was never comfortable with
success. “He wouldn’t do the talk shows or dinners,” Bixby said. “He
didn’t want people knowing what he looked like. He told people he
was a blond Scandinavian type.” In fact, Kliban was tall and dark,
about six-foot-two, and handsome, with a dark beard. CATS ‘N’ DOGS
features some of Kliban’s best-known drawings as mouse pads and screensavers.

The world-renowned Danish Blue plate is the centerpiece of CATS ‘N’ DOGS Collector Plate section, where more than 100 breed-specific plates are displayed. Danish Blue plates are acclaimed for a firing process that produces a unique and sought-after blue underglaze, and for their artistry, with much credit due to Natalia Brampton, the artist responsible for almost all of the dog motifs in the current catalog. Born in Siberia, Brampton studied at the Novosibirsk Art School of Russia. Winner of the 1984 “Painter of the Year” award in Russia for her portrait “Boy and His Dog” (her son and their Collie), she went on to repeat that honor a few years later. Now residing in England, where in 1999 she was voted one of the “10 best English Artists,” Brampton brings style and accuracy to her breed-specific works. The dogs are depicted in their own unique surroundings, giving meaning and atmosphere to each individual plate. Although Brampton says she is “still learning,” she is widely considered the best canine artist in England. Her artistry, and the work of other fine artists, combines with the legendary Danish Blue firing process to produce Collector Plates that CATS ‘N’ DOGS is pleased to feature and you will be proud to give or to own. |
