Pets, like people, need to eat. In fact, depending on what kind of pet you want, food may end up being the single largest expense you have over the course of your pet’s life. Pet supplies other than food vary greatly based on what kind of pet you own. For example, if you own an iguana, you’ll be looking at light bulbs of all things as a pet supply. Since iguanas are cold blooded, they require a heat lamp. Many tank owners also use a sub-strata heating pad to warm the ground. As a dog owner, you wouldn’t even think of purchasing sand, a tank, or heating lamps for your pet.

That’s not to say there are no dog supplies, but rather dogs take a different type of care than lizards do. They need attention and affection, which is a connection that humans just don’t make with reptiles. Anyone who has seen their dog look up at them with those big, sad eyes knows exactly what I mean by the connection between pet and pet owner.

Cats are more similar to dogs than iguanas, but they still require distinct pet supplies that neither of the other pets do. Cats are actually not domesticated, they cohabitate with humans, but recent studies have shown that they are not “tamed” in the same way a dog or a rodent is. They see their relationship with their owners as a way to get food, and feel they are far more of an equal than domesticated pets do. Some cat owners buy special items like cat sweaters, for their pets.

So what does that mean for pet products? It means that you need to keep your cat happy in order to prevent destructive behaviors.  The worst thing is to come home to shredded pillows and curtains in tatters, with stuffing all over the room. There in the middle of it all you find your cat, sitting contentedly. So how do you avoid a scene like this? The best solutions are to give your cat a scratching post for while you are gone. The cat will prefer the post, it is far better for claws strength than working your curtains or couch after all. A scratching post is also more humane than declawing a cat and leaving it defenseless.

Regardless of whether you own a cat or a dog however, it makes sense to get some pet toys. Dogs especially are social animals, and they thrive on interaction. This means that while you are home, they want to be with you, and while you are away, they miss you. The anxiety caused by this can lead dogs into similar destructive tendencies as cats. Pet toys can help give your dogs and cats a positive outlet, preventing them from engaging in these negative behaviors. This also gives you a positive reinforcement to train your pets with, which works much more effectively than negative reinforcement does.
